The dog days of 2024 definitely need a silly twist, and part of this year’s summer Olympics are fully-blown funky. Some of the sports are the plain and simple excitement you can’t wait to balloon on peanuts while watching. But there are some, very few, that will eat the peanuts straight from your bowl. π₯£
What a strange way to phrase it, right? Well, that’s exactly the vibe of the most unusual Olympic sports that will mark your summertime like a hot iced tea would β now, even stranger, isn’t it? So, what are these interesting additions to this year’s five rings that everyone is buzzing about and can’t wait to enjoy? Let’s see!
1. Breaking
This bone-bending type of dancing first gained momentum as an Olympic sport at the 2018 Buenos Aires Summer Youth Olympic Games, and it’s now on the adult Paris team. And why wouldn’t it be when it’s a ’70s invention, and we all crave those classic years of the mutton chops back! π¨βπ¦³
So, this August (10-11), you’ll see the bones of a few B-boys and B-girls doing everything but cracking, hopefully. If you haven’t had a chance to go to the sea yet, they’ll be waving their bodies wavily, so there’s no need for any beachy experiences. These sportspeople will have you feeling ashamed for using your legs and not your ears to walk while competing for a title.
2. Modern Pentathlon
You know it’s a perfect day when you can ride a stallion, swing a sword, and dip your butt in cold water in that exact order. π The chaos of modern pentathlon brings you that and something extra β the fun of the riders shooting at targets for a hit or miss!
And if they miss, some of those peanuts from the blog’s intro will definitely hit the TV, so it’s still a win! Although it’s a discipline dating centuries back, the pentathlon was modernized in 1898, meaning it’s as fresh as a 19th-century daisy. But it is super fun to watch, and it really makes you question what else could fit in your day.
3. Ribbon Twirling / Rhythmic Gymnastics
Gymnasts who can make their ends meet are already pfft material. When someone decided to up their game and do all the twirling in a dance, with music, plain, old overbending became a bit usual. And one of the most unusual Olympic sports was born β rhythmic gymnastics! πΆ
This sport is full of drama, musicality, and fun. If Simone Biles sets the standards for impossible bends, twists, and flexibility, this year’s RG will blow your everyday stretches. What are all the ways to roll in life and not get entangled in a ribbon with some fancy music playing in the background? We can’t wait to see on 8 August!
4. Olympic Trampoline
American gymnast George Nissen invented this straight-from-the-yard sport. It became competitive in 1964, and the International Gymnastics Federation welcomed it abroad in 1998. This August, we’ll see lean boys and girls launch themselves over 8 meters in the low sky, twisting it all in those quick seconds up there! π¦
The moves these athletes have to perform are difficult; the more precise you are, the better score you get. And, the more fun it is to watch! So, don’t lay low this summer β turn on your TV to see professionals soar to its roof!
5. Kayak Cross
Here’s something unseen before β a cross where kayakers will be paddling through all sorts of aquatic obstacles! As if the twirling currents weren’t enough of a challenge, Paris had to squeeze in bumps in the ride. π§ Of course, it’s all for fun, games, and the beauty of life!
The sport will bring passion and emotion to the Games. Therefore, put on your swimming suit, hop on your sofa, and get ready for the waves of entertainment to cast you to your sports channel. If Maialen Chourraut, a three-time medalist in Kayak singles, says this is it, it is it!
6. Cycling BMX
Some sports people like to fly high and extreme but still have their butts and feet land on something cozier than the ground when they reach it on their way back. And the Cycling BMX games are perfect for that β the don’t-do-this-at-home great alternative would be Pawns.app Games.
The sport was first introduced at the 2020 Tokyo Games, but this year, it’s about to flatten many tires. π Competitors will be battling walls, boxes, spines, and ramps for a shaky victory. Everything will matter, from the risk factor to the creativity, variety, and how difficult tricks are. And not even bronze champion Nikita Ducarroz knows whose pedals will scratch the 2024 winner’s podium!
7. Handball
If you’re stoked for some unusual Olympic sports with plenty of pinching and ouching, you must watch handball. Players can’t make more than three steps without dribbling the ball, and they get to carry it in their hands. π No foot moves, or the referee will whistle through your soul! And you score goals in a football-net-like goal.
The game is not new to the Olympics β it’s been a regular sport since the 1936 Berlin Games. However, it’s the definition of fun and sweaty, jumpy sportsmanship, and we can all cheer for that! And while the dates for the sport are now past (it all happened by the end of July), you can still watch the replays.
8. Marathon Swimming
The 8th and 9th of August will have you smirking on salty water. The pool is a safe place for professional swimmers who can make fish jealous with their surface-level wiggles. But the sea β well, that’s where it gets clear that you’re clearly not a fish. And marathon swimmers will be flapping off wild tides, currents, and even wildlife!
It will definitely be a challenge for them and a wave of fun for us. π So, this August, keep your TV away from the sea splashes and use it to watch an Olympic alternative to Survival.
9. Sport Climbing
Next on our list of unusual Olympic sports is sport climbing. We guess you can win in this if you can speed it up across those rocky platforms used in indoor climbing! At least that’s what 2024 competitors in this funsy will have to do if they want to literally reach the top. It will be fast, and there will be bouldering and 15-meter-tall walls. πͺ
The fun starts on 5 August and ends on the 10th. Therefore, mark the fun on your calendar, and add some rocks to your TV marathoning. You’ll see high achievers climbing them with their legs, arms, and whatever body parts can curve around rocks and bring them to a win!
10. Table Tennis
The game has been broadcast since 27 July, and the last match will take place on 10 August. And it’s not ping pong but a completely different sport β it’s tennis, on a table, and the rules are tennis rules. And we get how it still hints at ping pong. Still, it’s not!
There will be singles, doubles, and tennis-ing the ball around will stir much excitement for the players and audience alike. It’s the tippy-toeing around, the squeaks of the floor, and the bouncing of the ball. And more than that, it’s the fact that it’s an Olympic game that will have you watching it alertly! π
